It's Chrome browser is dominant in the search market and Google sees it as the ideal way to stop people reusing poor passwords.To mark the browser turning ten – that's older than Instagram, Uber and Snapchat – the firm has beefed up its password manager. The new version of Google Chrome (V.69) will recommend strong passwords to people when they're signing up for websites or updating settings."Staying secure on the web means using strong and unique passwords for every different site," Google wrote in a blog post announcing the changes. "When it’s time to create a new password, Chrome will now generate one for you (so you’re not using your puppy’s name for all of your passwords anymore)."Each password has one lowercase character, one uppercase and at least one number. Google says when websites require symbols in their password structures it can add these in and it's possible for users to manually edit the generated password. When Google is generating the password, every time you click away from its suggestion a new one is created.Google's strengthening of its password manager may finally have an impact on those who refuse to change bad habits. And there's one major reason why things could be different this time: market dominance.Of all internet browser usage, Chrome accounts for 60 per cent. Its nearest competitor, Safari, has a 14 per cent market share. The once mighty Internet Explorer is in sixth place with just a three per cent share of usage. Google Chrome isn't used when people create passwords in apps on phones or televisions, so won't always be accessible when trying to login to services outside of Chrome. And with Google's business model built on data and advertising revenue, some might be adverse to sharing even more data with the firm.There are plenty of other password managers that work across multiple devices and have family sharing functions.Google's improvement to how it can handle your passwords comes in the latest version of Chrome: version 69. As part of the update, Google has given the browser a visual overhaul to bring it ine line with its material design standard.
